Top 10 Smartphone SoC’s Until Now

Well, we have various stuff on the top smartphones but users don’t know which are the top smartphone SoCs on the performance basis. To let you make aware of them here we are with top 10 smartphone Socs.

First of all some folks here don’t know what is Soc and what it does. To let them know here’s a tiny little detail of SoCs.

What is SoC (Smartphone Chips)?

A system on a chip or system on chip (SoC or SOC) is an integrated circuit (IC) that integrates all components of a computer or other electronic system into a single chip. The one-liner would be that it is the equivalent of a computer motherboard, including main processor, graphics processor and memory — on a single chip. So its a chip which consists all the graphical processor, rams, etc.

There’s a great variety of SoCs and some major companies those build them are – Intel, Qualcomm, Samsung, Hynix, etc.

SoCs in Smartphones

Since the evolution of Smartphones, big SoCs are present in the them. There’s huge requirement of memory, processing power to run a smartphone and gpus for displays. To tackle this problem big SoCs development companies are making high end SoCs with huge memories, buffer space, GPUs, RAM capacity and other things.

Nowadays, smartphones are using SoCs which have RAM capacity of 3GB, 4GB and we have met with a smartphone having 6GB RAM just few days ago.

So, if you want to buy a Smartphone then do check its System on Chip to better know about it. Here we are listing

Top 10 Smartphone SoCs

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 – It was launched last year and Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, LG G5, Mi 5, Xperia X Performance are smartphones that are packed with the Snapdragon 820 SoC. The Snapdragon 820 scores 136,383 points on AnTuTu Benchmark. Its features:

  • Kryo quad-core CPU
  • eMMC 5.1
  • HDMI 2.0
  • Native 4K display at 60 fps with 120 Hz
  • H.265/HEVC decoding 4K at 60 fps
  • 14 nm FinFET
  • Quick Charge 3.0
  • Adreno 530 with support for Vulkan 1.0

Apple A9 – The A9 features an Apple-designed 64-bit 1.85 GHz ARMv8-A dual-core CPU called Twister. The A9 in the iPhone 6S has 2GB of LPDDR4 RAM included in the package. The A9 has a per-core L1 cache of 64 KB for data and 64 KB for instructions, an L2 cache of 3 MB shared by both CPU cores, and a 4 MB L3 cache that services the entire SoC and acts as a victim cache.

Samsung Exynos 8890 – It features the big.LITTLE arrangement which features a quad-core array of those in-house Mongoose 64-bit ARMv8 cores as the performance cluster, while more mundane tasks will be handled by another four Cortex-A53 cores.

Kirin 950 –  It is a big.LITTLE SoC with 4x Cortex A72 cores each at 2.3GHz with a further 4 Cortex A53 cores at 1.8GHz. HiSilicon touts a brand new memory controller that is able to support both LPDDR3 and LPDDR4. In the case of the Mate 8 we find 3/4GB of LPDDR4 running at 1333MHz, slightly lower than what we’ve seen on competing SoCs such as from Samsung, Qualcomm and Nvidia.

Samsung Exynos 7420 – The Samsung Exynos Octa 7420 has a high performing CPU with a maximum clock speed of 2,100.00 MHz. It has 8 core(s), resulting in extremely efficient multi-tasking when compared to dual core processors.

Qualcomm 810 – Both the Snapdragon 810 and Snapdragon 808 processors integrate Qualcomm Technologies’ 4th Generation Cat 6 LTE Advanced multimode modem together with support for the Qualcomm RF360™ Front End Solution, and support 3x20MHz Carrier Aggregation, enabling speeds of up to 300 Mbps in the broadest set of spectrum deployment configurations to date. Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 Key features:

  • Native 4K Ultra HD interface and video
  • Upgraded camera suite using gyro-stabilization and 3D noise reduction
  • 14-bit dual Image Signal Processors (ISPs)
  • Adreno 430 graphics processing unit (GPU) provides support for OpenGL ES 3.1 plus hardware tessellation, geometry shaders and programmable blending
  • High speed LPDDR4 memory
  • Frame buffer compression and external 4K display support via HDMI1.4
  • Qualcomm VIVE 2-stream 802.11ac with multi-user MIMO
  • Support for Bluetooth 4.1, USB 3.0, NFC and the latest Qualcomm IZat location core for ubiquitous and highly accurate location services

Qualcomm 652 – The Snapdragon 652, previously known as Snapdragon 620) has an octa-core CPU (4x 1.8GHz Cortex-A72 and 4x 1.2GHz Cortex-A53). Both chip come with a new Adreno 510 GPU supporting Quad HD screens, 4K video recording support and LTE Cat.7 connectivity.

Apple A8 – The Apple A8 is a 64-bit ARM based system on a chip (SoC) designed by Apple Inc. It first appeared in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which were introduced on September 9, 2014. Apple states that it has 25% more CPU performance and 50% more graphics performance while drawing only 50% of the power compared to its predecessor, the Apple A7.

Qualcomm 650 – It is quite similar to Snapdragon 652 except the Hexa-core (1.8 GHz dual-core Cortex-A72 and 1.4 GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU.

Qualcomm 808 – The Snapdragon 808 and 810 were announced on April 7, 2014. Here are some features:

  • ARMv8-A
  • 64-bit architecture
  • DSP Hexagon V56
  • 14-bit dual-ISP up to 21 MP
  • 20 nm manufacturing technology

These were few SoCs or System on Chips that are popular these days in smartphone market.
