Google AOSP commit suggests two Pixel devices to be released in 2018

Google introduced the new Pixel line-up smartphones in October, 2016 and followed the practice in 2017 as well. However, it seems that Google might be ahead of time in releasing the upcoming Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones this year. The devices are still under way, though AOSP code commit inadvertently confirms the name of upcoming flagship series which is too early when compared to previous launches.

XDA Developers has recently reported that a new AOSP commit named Cherrypick, mentions Pixel 3 in an official code that helps decide which Auto Selection Network UI to use for a particular device. A comment in the code states “This change added the config because the HAL V_1_2 only supports Pixel 3, and the new Auto Selection Network UI is based on HAL V_1_2. So we set the flag to decide which Auto Selection Network UI should be used based in the device type.”

AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project and includes the processes, and the source code that collectively make Android, an operating system work on our mobile devices. HAL is Hardware Abstraction Layer, which in fact, is a piece of software that bridges the gap between the Android operating system and the hardware. The AOSP mentions some internal code changes in the Pixel 3 smartphone.

While its too early to talk about the upcoming Pixel handsets, the mention of devices in the official code asks for some attention. Though, there is no official confirmation about Pixel 3 series specs and hardware. We’ll keep you posted of more information about the forthcoming Pixel smartphones in the coming weeks and months.
