OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro to be devoid of IP Rating yet again

OnePlus seems to have rehearsed a lot, advertising its upcoming flagship devices– the  OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro. Since the official launch is nearing, the company has started teasing the devices by posting videos and images on the internet. In the most recent video, OnePlus has revealed that OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro won’t have an IP Rating this year too. The company has tried justifying that not adding an IP rating to its smartphones, proves cost-effective to a certain extent. It is an additional expense that would add $30 to the cost of each handset, the company said.

OnePlus assumes that the IP rating standardized testing is not a worthy expense considering their smartphones are allegedly water resistant. The video depicts that instead of spending money on IP rating testing, the company chose to buy something less expensive- a bucket, and tumbling the smartphone into a bucket of water.

While IP rating certification has been a standard feature in the industry, OnePlus doesn’t want to get involved, at least for now. If you pay close attention to the video, the company also wants to remind that its warranty does not cover water damage.

OnePlus co-founder, Carl Pei accepted the fact that IP ratings are in existence for a reason and quoted, “We know that an IP rating would be the simplest way to prove our phone’s capability, but the certification doesn’t help us communicate our focus on your real experience, which is why we created this direct and relatable video to show you what our water-resistant quality can actually bring to you in your real life in a more powerful way.”

Even if you choose to buy an IP rating certified device, water damage will not be covered in the warranty. However, the IP rating on your device gives you a fair idea of the protection level and the duration until your device is able to survive when accidentally exposed. In OnePlus’ case, there is no IP rating and you may never know what’s the limit.
