Opera has announced the launch of its Opera TV Store for OEMs, developers and content providers. While it may not mean much to us consumers for now (at least until OEMs start putting it on their TVs and set-top boxes) – when it arrives it could possibly change the world of Smart TVs. What makes the Opera TV Store different from the competition is the fact that it is completely HTML5-based. The store and all the apps within are done using HTML5.
This means that no matter what TV set or set top box a consumer uses to access the store and its apps – they’ll get to enjoy the same experience regardless of the platform: a big plus for consumers who don’t want the hassle of re-learning how to use the same app just because it has a different UI on a different platform. The Opera TV Store is already loaded with thousands of apps, with many more on the way – much better than most OEM’s proprietary stores that don’t have such a wide selection.
There was no mention of when we’ll start seeing it on the market, but the Opera TV Store will be shown off at href=”http://www.cesweb.org/” rel=”homepage” target=”_blank” title=”Consumer Electronics Show”>CES 2012.
