According Digitimes, Google is likely to launch Android 5.0 (Jelly Bean) in the second quarter of 2012. Microsoft is set to launch Windows 8 around the same time, and with the operating system envisioned to be a convergent OS, Android might find itself another major competitor in the tablet and smartphone business apart from iOS and Windows Phone 7.  

 
According to sources, Android 5.0 will be optimized for tablet PCs, although Google will also integrate Google’s Chrome OS functions will also integrate a feature that lets vendors choose to adopt only Android 5.0 or install Android 5.0 as a dual-boot alternative to Windows 8 tablets. Said system will enable users to switch between operating systems without shutting down the device. Check out how long it took Google to release the different versions of Android below:

  • Android 1.5 to Android 1.6 – 5 months
  • Android 1.6 to Android 2.0 – 1 month
  • Android 2.0 to Android 2.2 – 7 months
  • Android 2.2 to Android 2.3 – 7 months
  • Android 2.3 to Android 3.0 – 2 months
  • Android 3.0 to Android 4.0 – 8 months
