For a limited time, you can grab some additional free space while href=”http://www.dropbox.com/” rel=”homepage” target=”_blank” title=”Dropbox”>Dropbox is testing its automatic photo and video uploading feature. In exchange for trying the experimental build, you can get up to 4.5GB of extra space for free.

Here’s what you’ll find:

  • The app can now automatically upload photos and videos in the background using Wi-Fi or your data plan.
  • No more size limit. So upload to your hearts content.
  • If there are network issues, the upload will resume when those issues are resolved.
  • Some performance improvements and bug fixes.
  • You’ll also get 500MB of free space on your first automatic photo upload.

I have successfully earned the initial 500MB of extra space on my first import, and am currently waiting for the upload to finish on another 500MB, for yet more storage.

There are some caveats to the beta, as expected. The photo import feature isn’t currently available for Mac 10.4 or Linux. You will also have to have AutoPlay enabled on your href=”http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWS” rel=”homepage” target=”_blank” title=”Windows”>Windows machine if that is your OS of choice. You can find more details and things to watch for in the same Dropbox forum post as the beta download link.
